Project
Assist with successful introduction of redevelopment at Glenmont in Silver Spring, Maryland
Situation
Glenmont is an area of Silver Spring directly across the street from a busy
Metro transit station. The JBG Companies proposed to revitalize the area by
converting an old apartment building property into a new, diverse residential
development with a vibrant shopping area.
Strategy
- Convinced long-time residents that redevelopment would bring new prosperity
as well as a variety of shopping and dining choices
- Proposed an attractive design concept
- Promoted the vision of “green” building design
- Attracted favorable media awareness
- Identified key neighborhood leaders, inviting them to “meet-the-developer”
sessions
- Developed an informational website to keep the community up to date
- Enlisted experts to answer citizen questions and concerns
- Created a resident survey to assess community interest in shops and restaurants
- Provided all public information in Spanish
- Maintained communication between the developer and the property seller to
keep existing tenants aware of the redevelopment plans and timeline
- Generated balanced media coverage, serving as spokesperson
Results
Neighbors generally embraced revitalization of their community and even
encouraged JBG to rebuild a nearby shopping center. JBG pursued rezoning of
the property.
